Abstract
Those of us who knew Rafael Pardo and shared with him the years of his academic work at the Universidad de los Llanos witnessed his permanent obsession for the progress of our institution. Rafael was proud to be a conservative, but we always saw him as one of those liberals of mind and intellect, creator of far-reaching projects, tireless in his work to convince his colleagues, directors and students to think big to leave a mark on future generations.
He fought day after day for the reforms he saw as necessary and pushed forward, against all odds, the creation of new faculties and new programs. He was an enemy of seeing his university conform to the image of being a small university, because, for him, the limit was his own imagination.
When he enjoyed his sabbatical year, he surprised us with the idea of spending it getting to know one of the oldest universities in the world, the University of Salamanca. We took it as a pleasant exercise in historical research, very much in accordance with his conservative mentality. We were very wrong.
